Cyclone Alfred for South East Queensland

So I am 40 and have never been in a cyclone situation. Unfortunately, I had some plans this week to go visit different, cool and exciting places but due to Cyclone Alfred making its way, I decided I best stay put.

I spent two days getting prepared. One good thing about the media is they definitely gave us lots of warning and instructions on how to prepare.

Have I prepared enough? Only time will tell now but I feel like I have followed all the instructions to do what I can to make this cyclone event pass by seemingly unharmed.

Obviously the main focus is safety. So if things go south, I have a back up plan. I just hope with the new infrastructure on where I live, with huge drains being placed behind where I live that the normal flooding I get, will just be that, normal and not overly extra.

Things could flood but as long as I have a safety plan than it will be ok. And I sure hope, if you are also going through this cyclone that you have a plan for you and your family. Just remember and this is so important, if your house starts to flood, focus on where you and your family will be. If your house starts to flood it’s too late to do much about your belongings. It’s time to just focus on where to go or what to sit on. How far will you let the flooding get before you leave?

These are really important questions to ask yourself before it floods.

I am not going to say if this cyclone is going to get better because it’s slightly delayed off its timeline to arrive. I am not a meteorologist. I am just following the official advice that you are all following.

So now while, it’s a perfect day (Thursday I am writing this). I could so easily go out. But I definitely want to stay at home, where it is safe. As the cyclone could change last minute and then I am stuck somewhere.

Also all the beaches have high tides and some erosion. So I definitely do not want to visit a beach to check it out right now. I can see the images on social media and that is enough for me.

I figure this cyclone is something to post about because like travelling, this is an experience. Maybe a one-off or maybe a few in my life time. I have definitely experienced floods in the past and have stories from that. But never a cyclone until this week.

Now it is Friday and still no cyclone. Some reports are saying it will start tonight while others say it will start tomorrow morning either at 6am or 10am. Hopefully, we all get a good nights sleep tonight to be able to be fresh and awake for the big day tomorrow.

Of course, it’s been delayed. I believe the cyclone was supposed to hit Tuesday, then Thursday and now tonight or tomorrow. This also means, food is dwindling. I went to the store last minute just to do a top up of some dinners and there was literally nothing left but snacks. So I bought a cake, some chocolate, pop corn … you get the idea. I figure if we have to sit through a cyclone, we should make it as fun as possible.

I am a bit nervous about the cyclone itself, which is expected to bring with it, high winds and lots of heavy rain. Apparently the sound of the wind will sound like a jet airplane above your home. I have my crocheting ready to focus on, once it gets bad or if I can’t focus because I am listening to the storm then I will crochet after the storm, when we still cannot go out due to flash flooding, falling trees etc.

So two things to be worried about, well three really: 1. The windows may smash. 2. The roof may fall through from a tree falling. 3. Flooding may occur. I am hoping that it will somehow just my place. I guess we are all hoping for this.

And then of course after the possibly six hours of the cyclone and a few days maybe even to a week of flooding (just my guess… remember I am not a weather expert) then the recovery will begin.

Who knows what will happen, except at least for most of us, we are as prepared as possible.
